You are sitting in an auditorium. The guest speaker was horrible. At the end of the presentation, everyone around you is clapping, then out of nowhere, the audience stands up, for a standing ovation. What do you do? Do you follow suit with everyone else or sit there looking at your cell phone?
I predict that you stand up and copy what everyone else is doing! Even though you know that the presentation sucked, your mind is trying to comprehend why everyone is clapping and standing.
Why are you doing what you are doing?
We do not understand why, but everyone is doing it, so it must be right! As mammals, we are no different than any other animal. We have learned there is survival in numbers then being alone. At a very young age, we had been taught to conform to societies rules! It is crucial to find a group and fit in! Under pressure, we have the tendance to do what the leader says.
Do you remember playing follow the leader and Simon says?
It seems like a harmless game for children to play. It is, though this is one way we had been taught to follow the norm. The first day of school is just around the corner; you ask your mom for a new outfit because Becky has it. Tom has this cool new pair of shoes that you have to have! These are just a few ways that we learn to do as we are told and following suit.
However, what would happen if the individual does not care what the norm is, and they do what makes them happy?
I have found that conforming has its ups and downs. Yes, I do change my behaviour in different environments. As a fetus, I developed a brain. Growing up, I expanded on my knowledge, and now I am fully capable of thinking for myself and questioning the norm.
I have been called a rebel, loner, antisocial, the lone wolf! The fact is I choose to think for myself and not let anyone else tell me what is right or wrong, good or bad, what is acceptable and not! I like being a free spirit!
